Done with Your Articulate Storyline Course? What about the LMS?
Understanding Articulate 360’s Reporting & Tracking Options
When publishing courses for an LMS, you need to know two key items:
(1) What version of SCORM the LMS requires
(2) What reporting options you’ll need.
Here is an explanation of the SCORM types.
- SCORM 1.2 – Only reports one status i.e. pass or complete.
- SCORM 2004 – Newer SCORM standard that can report more than one status. Ask the LMS Admin to use SCORM 2004 Fourth Edition as the default within the LMS.
- AICC – The oldest standard and sometimes used for very simple items like documents.
- Tin Can or xAPI – Newest standard and often the best option. However, some LMS Admins may not be familiar with it.
After years trial and error, I’ve discovered that if your course doesn’t not show a course completion in the LMS, then first try changing the SCORM settings to a different one and retest in the LMS. For example, SCORM 1.2 to 2004.
Then set the LMS Reporting options to one of these four options.
LMS Reporting
Use? | Comments |
---|---|
Passed/Incomplete This option allows the LMS to receive both quiz result data and completion data. This is a very commonly used setting |
|
Passed/Failed The user passed or failed based on the results of the quiz. Generally, you must tell the LMS Administrator what the pass/fail percentage is, say 80% which the Admin sets in the “minimum score” or “quiz pass” field in the LMS. This is a commonly used setting. |
|
Completed/Incomplete The course passes the completion status to the LMS based on the number of slides completed. Not recommended if a course contains quizzes. |
|
Completed/Failed I could not find a good explanation of when and in what context this option should be used. I have never used it. |
Tracking Options
Use? | Comments |
---|---|
Track based on the Number of Slides Viewed This selection does not take into account the quiz results. If the user moved through all the slides, then the course is complete. If your quizzes are outside course, i.e. built in the LMS, then this would an appropriate selection. |
|
Track Using Quiz Results This is where things get more complicated. If you have several quiz interactions built into your course and you want a cumulative score to determine pass/fail, then you must include a final quiz result slide and indicate that slide in this setting. |
|
Track Using Complete Course Trigger In order for this completion status to work, you must create a “trigger” within the course such as, “Complete course when status is Completed/Passed when User Clicks the Finish Button”. This button will likely be on the last slide of the course. (This feature is not available on older versions of Storyline 1 and 2. |
