Training: One of the 7 Elements of an Effective Compliance Program

Training is one of the seven elements of an effective compliance program. But I believe that the word meaning of the word effective got lost somewhere when applied to compliance training.

What do your employees need to KNOW or DO to be compliant? Are we measuring that? We should. Don’t waste your money on ineffective training that doesn’t change behavior. Customized compliance training, effective communications, and compliance program management can help you transform your compliance program.

Sometimes the Employees aren’t the Problem

Determine why employees are not compliant; don’t assume. There could be dozens of reasons why. Often it’s the system, incentives or outdated procedures. Sure, it could be the training, but a good needs assessment can help determine that.

Boring PowerPoints aren’t Effective

There are many ways to approach behavior change and simply sending out the same old slide deck with endless bullet points, full of legaleaze rarely causes employees to change. Instead, deliver training that pinpoints the issue, is visually interesting and relevant to your employees.

We’ve Seen the Enemy and it’s Us

As a compliance professional I know that it’s just easier to go along with the existing program.  Let’s take a hard look at the whole program; all the processes, incentives, and culture; then we can really effect practical change. Pinpoint where the issue is and start there. Maybe you don’t need a huge, complex training program, maybe the answer is a simple communication or job aid. Save money and time by determining the root cause.
